1853: Use of title of "Professor" for faculty begins at school. John A. Getty principal for 11 months, followed by George
Morrison.
1857: Peabody Award established; corporal punishment abolished; Thomas A. Baird, principal.
1866: Name changed to Baltimore City College; course extended to five years. First organization of the Alumni Association lasts four years.
1870: Course returned to four years.
1873: Old Assembly Rooms destroyed in fire; school moved to temporary location at 53 St. Paul St.; William Elliott, principal

1875: Baltimore builds City College's fIrst school building on Howard St., opposite Center, 421 students matriculate
1876: Bancroft Literary Association founded; The Johns Hopkins founded next to City; 4 City graduates in fIrst class.
1877: Course extended to five years again.
1878: Carrollton-Literary Society organized, later called the Carrollton-Wright Society in honor of its sponsor, Prof. Charles C. Wright.
1883: The "other" school founded (Poly)
