1839: School founded as the High School with Nathan C. Brooks, principal, and 46 students in rented building on Courtland St. now St. Paul Place.

1840: Move to Fireman's Insurance Company Building, South and Second (now Water) St.

1840: Move to northeast comer of Hanover and Lombard Sts.

1842: Return to Courtland St. building.

1843: First school building purchased, Fayette and Holiday Sts. near present City Hall, Build­ing known as The Old Assembly Rooms and the Theatre Tavern. Home for the school for over 39 years.

1844: School name changed to The Male High School with the founding this year of the Eastern and Western Female High Schools. Enrollment increases to 207 in new building.

1849: Rev. Francis G. Waters, principal.

1850: Named changed to Central High School

1851: Departmental System adopted, eight departments, two courses: Classical and English. First public commencement with 10 graduates.
